Sandra Espinoza’s practice explores themes of connectivity, communication, and metaphysical relationships—particularly forms of connection that extend beyond the physical senses. Inspired by concepts like telepathy, universal consciousness, and unseen energy fields, her work reflects a fascination with how humans might engage in less conventional ways. Nature and science—through observations of macro and micro worlds—have deeply influenced her sense of interconnectedness with life itself.

After experimenting with printmaking, Espinoza moved into painting, finding abstraction the most intuitive and open medium for expressing these expansive ideas. Each work begins instinctively, without a fixed plan, allowing a playful and responsive process. Influenced by Modernist and Abstract movements, she balances intuition with compositional awareness.

Espinoza works primarily with oil paint for its richness, texture, and luminosity. She avoids traditional brushes, preferring palette knives, repurposed plastic cards, sticks, and dead pens to build layered surfaces. Scratching into the paint creates points of contrast and encourages close viewing—serving as a metaphor for deeper attention.

Colour relationships play a central role in her exploration of communication and emotion. While earlier works were based on primary colour mixing, recent works involve a broader palette. The act of mixing paint remains a meditative, tactile beginning to each piece.

Her influences include nature, Expressionism, and Modernist movements from the 1950s–70s, particularly Minimalism. Over time, Espinoza’s work has shifted from richly layered abstraction toward a more minimalist visual language, where negative space and reduced symbolism carry meaning.

Ultimately, Sandra Espinoza’s works are joyful expressions of experiential moments—aimed at uplifting the viewer through colour, form, and the invitation to look more closely.
