Artist Statement
Tony Langford’s debut Melbourne exhibition marks a significant step in his artistic journey, making a bold visual statement for first-time viewers and establishing a foundation for future connections.
This collection reflects his ongoing artistic evolution, where diverse works are unified by a distinct visual language. Drawing inspiration from nature, Tony blends organic forms with fluid, expressive brushstrokes. Layers of color engage in dynamic tension before resolving into harmony, refined with intricate fine-line detailing that creates an “x-ray” effect—revealing the essence of each piece.
The result is a vibrant and dynamic body of work, where the raw structure of each artwork is exposed, inviting viewers to look beyond the surface.
Artist Biography
Born in Newcastle, NSW, in 1973, Tony Langford’s artistic journey began in high school, where passionate teachers ignited his creative spark. He later earned a Diploma in Graphic Design and a Certificate in Life Drawing, winning the NSW TAFE Art Prize for best 2D graphic design. A self-taught artist, Langford continually expands his techniques across illustration, painting, and mixed media.
A major shift saw Langford trade the coast for country life, surrounded by mountain ranges that reshaped his artistic perspective. Eventually, he returned to the coastline, gaining a renewed appreciation for Australia’s landscapes—an enduring theme in his work. Pairing these life changes with a long-awaited decision to pursue art full-time, Langford’s creativity reignited.
His work is a meditation, a compulsion. Preferring unconventional surfaces, he paints on recycled materials like plywood, masonite, and old doors, embracing their raw, tactile qualities. His inspiration comes from the natural world—mountain silhouettes, ocean hues, burnt grass, and bushfire regeneration—blended with influences from music, street art, road trips, and portraiture.
Langford’s art is deeply personal yet invites open interpretation, forging a connection between artist and viewer. Influenced by Brett Whiteley, John Olsen, Charles Blackman, and contemporary figures like Ben Quilty and Scottie Marsh, his work remains uniquely his own.
