Artist Statement
Nocturnes is a contemplative exhibition of oil paintings by Jane Farnan that reimagines and interprets night landscapes encountered during her solitary rambles. In this body of work, Farnan invites viewers into a world shaped by darkness—where light is scarce, forms dissolve into shadow, and the familiar is rendered strange, lyrical, and dreamlike.
Drawing from real places experienced during quiet night time walks, Farnan transforms these fleeting moments into richly layered compositions that evoke both memory and mood. Her work does not aim for literal representation but instead captures the atmosphere and emotional resonance of the nocturnal world. Through subtle tonal shifts, expressive brushwork, and a muted palette, she creates spaces where time seems suspended and perception is guided as much by feeling as by sight.
Nocturnes reflects Farnan’s fascination with the poetic potential of the night—the way it softens edges, obscures detail, and opens space for reflection and imagination. In this series, the night is not simply a backdrop, but a subject in itself: mysterious, quiet, and alive with unseen narratives.
